Division 3 champion Whitinsville Christian may have lost superstar point guard Colin Richey in a prep school transfer this year, but the Crusaders have regrouped and are rounding into form as evidenced by their 65-26 thumping of Sutton High Friday night. .Rangy seniors Grant Brown and Antonio Estrella missed the first four games of the season, but the Crusaders finally looked at full strength against the Sammies, with Brown scoring 16 of his game-high 18 points in the first half. ..“There's a lot of things that came out tonight,” said Brown, a crowd-pleaser with his crafty finishing. “(Last year's state semifinal) was the hardest loss I've ever had and between that and losing to Sutton last year… We wanted revenge.” ..Junior center Graham Tienhaara also started strong, scoring six of his 10 points in the first quarter, while senior captain Tim Dufficy scored six of his eight in the third quarter before the starters came out. All 11 Crusaders scored a field goal. ..“We had a great week of practice and we were ready to play tonight,” said WC coach Jeff Bajema, whose squad won its sixth straight game, improving to 6-1 (4-1 Dual Valley). “We executed, played pretty good defense, and we rebounded well and when we do that, we're OK.” ..Whitinsville Christian faces two tough tests next week — at fifth-ranked St. Peter-Marian on Monday and at No. 7 St. Bernard's on Thursday. ..Brown, a 6-foot-3 forward with a hairstyle reminiscent of Tim Lincecum, said the memory of suffering the first DVC loss in three years to Sutton in 2012 stuck with them and played a factor in WC rushing out to a 40-12 halftime lead. ..“This is a huge rivalry for us,” Bajema said. The coach said he felt that “it showed” out on the court how badly his kids wanted this victory. ..Six-foot bruiser Gordy Smythe scored nine of his 13 points after the break to lead the Sammies (3-6, 1-4), with the junior serving as the only reliable scoring threat. ..Sutton was able to bookend the first quarter with a pair of 3s as Matt Soule hit from deep to open the scoring and Tom McGovern tacked on another at the buzzer. ..Brown scored four of his eight first-quarter points during a 10-0 run that spaced it out to 16-5 with 2:45 left in the period. ..Brown and Tienhaara were at it again in the second quarter, combining for 10 points as the Crusaders started the quarter on a 16-0 run, forcing turnovers and getting out in transition. Sutton was held scoreless the first 6:49 of the quarter. ..“He's just an active kid on the glass,” Bajema said of Tienhaara. “He never quits.” ..Dufficy converted a physical layup and then hit a 15-footer from the right side on the next possession as he joined with Brown in getting Whitinsville Christian off to an 8-0 start to the second half to take a 48-12 lead. ..Smythe hit a 3-pointer and a free throw to mix in four straight Sutton points, but Whitinsville Christian countered and carried a 57-19 advantage heading into the fourth quarter. ..From - www.telegram.com/article/20130112/NEWS/101129969/1152/hom....
