Caïn by Fernand-Anne Piestre, also known as Cormon was painted in 1880 when it was one of the key works in the Salon. Illustrating a poem by Victor Hugo, Cormon worked from a model for each figure, showiing a concern for achaelogical realism amidst his portrayal of primitive life.
"When, with his children, dressed in animal skins,
his hair tousles and livid in the midst of the storm,
Cain fled before Jehovah, just as night was falling,
the grim man came to the foot of a mountain in a vast plain..."
- Victor Hugo, La Légende des Siècles, 1859
The Musée d'Orsay (The Orsay Museum), housed in the former railway station, the Gare d'Orsay, holds mainly French art dating from 1848 to 1914, including paintings, sculptures, furniture, and photography, and is probably best known for its extensive collection of impressionist masterpieces by popular painters such as Monet and Renoir. Many of these works were held at the Galerie nationale du Jeu de Paume prior to the museum's opening in 1986.hair salon furniture
