It seems like all news anchors (especially the ones on CNN) all have the same hairstyle...short/medium length bobbed hair. So is it true that most news anchors can't have long hair and must cut their hair shorter?

No. It's not really true.
It depends on what the station wants and how they look. Most on air people have to get approval before drastically changing their hair. Where I work the News director prefers the ladies to have longer hair if they can pull off the look. Personally I think we're stuck in the 80s with big anchor hair.
We do have a few people with shorter hair. And we occasionally have anchors change their hair while they're working here. We even had a girl cut her hair on the air for Locks for love.
Most of the time it's up to the person as long as it looks professional.
