The Wigmaker made wigs and hairpieces for ladies and gentlemen. They cut and dressed hair, as well as clean, repair and powder wigs. They also shaved and barbered clients.
Exquisite hairpieces are hand-sewn from human, horse, goat and yak hair. Of course, human hair was the most expensive, but yak (from China) was the most popular. I thought goat hair, however, felt the softest. Horse hair was just to think and coarse. They dyed the hair, twist 7-10 individual strands together and tied them to a string. Many "strings" of several twisted bunches of hair make a wig. It took a lot of work!
It was interesting to learn that the men's wigs were often more elaborate than women's. And that some men had several wigs, for different occasions.
