Phân bố, sinh học và sinh thái:
Phân bố rải rác ở khắp các vùng núi và trung du. Mua là loài cây đặc hữu của vùng Đông Dương và Nam Trung Quốc. Ở Việt Nam, mua mọc rất nhiều ở vùng núi thấp dưới 1000m đến các tỉnh vùng trung du, đôi khi gặp cả ở đồng bằng và hải đảo, từ Đắc Lắc vào Đồng Nai, Bà Rịa-Vũng Tàu và thành phố Hồ Chí Minh. Cây đặc biệt ưa sáng, chịu được hạn và có thể sống được trên nhiều loại đất. Mua ra quả đều hàng năm, thụ phấn nhờ côn trùng hoặc gió, tái sinh tự nhiên từ hạt. Quả mua chín là nguồn thức ăn của một số loài chim, thú; hạt giống phát tán đi khắp nơi theo phân chim, thú.
Bộ phận dùng:
Lá (Folium Melastomae affinis). Thu hái quanh năm, dùng tươi hay phơi khô.

Lá chứa castalagin.
Tác dụng dược lý và công dụng: chất castalagin, procyandin B – 2, helichrysolid đều có tác dụng hạ huyết áp. Lá, quả và rễ mua đều có tác dụng gây săn se.

Thuốc thông tiểu, tiêu thủng, sưng lá lách. Lá mua được dùng trị tiêu chảy.

Mua nhiều hoa - Melastoma polyanthum Blume (M. affine D. Don), thuộc họ Mua - Melastomataceae.
Mô tả: Cây bụi, cao 1m hay hơn; phần trên thân phân nhánh; nhánh tròn, có vẩy nhỏ, có răng. Lá có phiến hình mác thuôn, dài 7-14 (20)cm, rộng 2,5-6cm, có vài lông cứng nằm ở mặt trên, nhiều ở gân của mặt dưới. Cụm hoa ở ngọn, gồm 2-7 hoa lưỡng tính, màu hồng tim tím; ống đài dài 8-10mm, thùy 5; cánh hoa 5, dài 2cm; nhị 10 với 2 loại nhị; bầu 5 ô. Quả nang dài 1-2cm, chứa nhiều hạt đen.
Bộ phận dùng: Rễ, lá - Radix et Folium Melastomae Polyanthi.
Nơi sống và thu hái: Loài phân bố ở Trung Quốc, Ấn Độ, Thái Lan, Việt Nam, Malaixia, Ôtrâylia. Ở nước ta, cây mọc ở nhiều nơi vùng đồng bằng Nam bộ, nơi ẩm ướt, ven bờ suối; là loài cây chỉ thị cho đất chua và ẩm.
Tính vị, tác dụng: Vị đắng, chát, tính mát; có tác dụng thanh nhiệt lợi thấp, hoá ứ chỉ huyết.
Công dụng: Dân gian dùng làm thuốc thông tiểu, tiêu thũng, sưng lá lách, ỉa chảy.
Rễ, lá được dùng ở Vân Nam (Trung Quốc) trị ăn uống không tiêu, lỵ, viêm ruột, viêm gan, nôn ra máu, dùng ngoài trị đòn ngã tổn thương, ngoại thương xuất huyết.

It is an attractive shrub which is fast growing and adapts well to a variety of soils and conditions, although best flowering is achieved in full sun with a good water supply. The large showy flowers last only a few days but are produced over many months and in some areas throughout the year. These are followed by blue-black fruit with a sweet, edible flesh which will stain the mouth a dark bluish colour, hence the common name of Bluetongue. Regular pruning is recommended from an early age to encourage a dense, bushy form.
It has a close relationship with native bees, especially the Giant Carpenter Bee (genus Xylocopa) and the Metallic Green Carpenter Bee (genus Lestis). The pollen is tucked away in deep pores in the stamens and is only released if the stamens are vigorously shaken. This is done by `buzz pollination’ where the bee grasps the stamens with its legs and vibrates its wings rapidly causing the pollen to rain down upon the bee. Once the pollen is all over the bee it can be readily transferred to the flower’s stigma, resulting in pollination.
Introduced Honey Bees (Apis mellifera) are unable to `buzz’ the stamens and can only collect any pollen which has been spilt on the petals. They cannot pollinate the plant.
